Dealing w/ Mental Illness

There are some things one can do to stave off a decline into Depression. Here are just a few things:

1. Think positively. It's hard to do. Especially when all the chemicals in your brain say "That went wrong and that went wrong and that went wrong." You have to stop that train in it's tracks and say "This went well and this went well and this went well" and pretty soon the train is moving in the other direction- the right direction!

2. Meditation. Clearing your mind and thinking of happy things really helps. When I do it. I have a mantra that I repeat and it always helps: "Things don't have to go perfectly for me to be happy." So, when my daughter gets upset going back to school because she had five days off, I can repeat those words and focus on the real reason she is crying.

3. Exercise and eating healthy. It's hard to do that around the Holidays when you have been sick for a week straight or you have errands to run and places to go. It's also hard to eat healthy when there is so much chocolate just waiting to be eaten! And fresh fruits and veggies are more expensive. Smoothies work great!

4. Talking to people. That helps me reconnect because Depression makes me want to isolate myself and stay home, when in fact, all I really need to do is go out and do things!

5. Shopping. It's true. It works. Just stick to a budget.

That's all I'm saying.

This is my blog. My name is Megan A.

I love shopping therapy too. Luckily, I live next to my mom who calls me every once in a while to go for some shopping therapy, otherwise I'd never get out for fun shopping.

I think just going to a Barnes and Noble or Border's or any bookstore and just browse and sit down and read parts of books. Megan, you have come up with a good list..do you post it? Sometimes people get too depressed to think of what was on their list. So if a list is posted somewhere on a wall, that would help. Love ya! mom
