"If you or someone you know is being treated with lithium, you most likey have questions about this drug. What does it do? How effective is it? Is it safe? This pamphlet provides you with basic inormation about the psychiatric use of lithium.

What is lithium?...lithium carbonate and lithium citrate, chemicals which are used as treatments for some mental disorders.

What are the current psychiatric uses of lithium? Basically, it states that manic episodes typically are characterized by hyperactivity, elation, overtalkativeness, tremendous energy, dcreased need for leep and usually but not always poor judgement. Manic attacks persist, on the average, from 1 to 3 months. Depressive episodes have persistent feelings of hopelessness, inappropraite sadness and a general loss of interest in people, things and ideas that were important in the past. Symptoms: lack of energy, insomnia or sleeping too much, loss of appetitie, weight loss or weight gain, inability to make simple decisions, etc. They last a few weeks to a few months. On average 2 to 4 months.
